Chronic Stroke

Chronic stroke refers to the long-term phase after a stroke, when persistent neurological impairments remain following the initial brain injury and medical stabilization. Reduced blood flow or intracerebral bleeding damages neural tissue, while subsequent changes in synaptic connections, motor networks, and muscle control can limit movement, sensation, language, or cognition. In neuroscience, chronic stroke provides a model for studying recovery, neural plasticity, and compensatory brain activity. Research and rehabilitation use behavioral assessment, neuroimaging, task-specific training, robotics, and neuromodulation to improve function and identify how surviving networks can support lasting recovery.

2013

We explore the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to improve language abilities in patients with chronic stroke and non-fluent aphasia. After identifying a site in the right frontal gyrus for each patient that responds optimally to stimulation, we target this site during ten days of rTMS treatment.

A Flexible Wearable Supernumerary Robotic Limb for Chronic Stroke Patients

2023

This protocol introduces a flexible wearable supernumerary robotic limb tailored to assist in finger rehabilitation for stroke patients. The design incorporates a bending sensor to facilitate seamless human-robot interaction. Validation through experiments involving both healthy volunteers and stroke patients underscores the efficacy and dependability of the proposed study.

Electroencephalography Network Indices as Biomarkers of Upper Limb Impairment in Chronic Stroke

2023

The experimental protocol demonstrates the paradigm for acquiring and analyzing electroencephalography (EEG) signals during upper limb movement in individuals with stroke. The alteration of the functional network of low-beta EEG frequency bands was observed during the movement of the impaired upper limb and was associated with the degree of motor impairment.

Various murine models of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) are widely used in experimental brain research. Here, we demonstrate the model of transcranial permanent distal MCAO which produces consistent cortical infarction of a size corresponding to damage imposed by the majority of human ischemic strokes.

The Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network Multi-Laboratory Model of Thromboembolic Stroke with Thrombolysis: TE-MCAo

2025

To simulate thromboembolic stroke, emboli prepared from heterologous rat blood were injected into the middle cerebral artery, followed by administration of systemic thrombolysis for recanalization. This version of the model is optimized for use in a multi-laboratory network and supports testing multiple candidate therapeutics.
