Infrared Illumination

Infrared illumination is the use of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible red light to illuminate, image, or modulate biological tissue. In neuroscience, near-infrared light can penetrate tissue more effectively than many visible wavelengths because tissue scattering and absorption are relatively low within parts of the near-infrared optical window; detectors then measure reflected, transmitted, or emitted light. These optical interactions support noninvasive brain imaging, monitoring of hemodynamic and neuronal activity, and investigation of light-sensitive neural responses. Infrared approaches can improve access to deeper structures while reducing dependence on visible-light excitation, making them valuable for neuroscience research and emerging neurotechnologies.

Dong and Zhiwei Chen, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the use of infrared (IR) spectroscopy (also known as vibrational spectroscopy) to elucidate the identity of an unknown compound by identifying the functional group(s) present. IR spectra will be obtained on an IR spectrometer using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) sampling technique with a neat sample of the unknown.
