Laminectomy Procedure

Laminectomy is a spinal surgical procedure that removes part or all of the lamina, the bony plate forming the back of a vertebra, to relieve pressure within the spinal canal. By enlarging the canal, the operation decompresses the spinal cord or nerve roots when narrowing, herniated discs, tumors, or other structural changes impair neural function. In neuroscience and neurosurgery, laminectomy helps address spinal stenosis, nerve compression, and selected spinal cord disorders, with goals of reducing pain, weakness, numbness, and impaired mobility. The procedure also provides surgical access for treating lesions or stabilizing the spine when additional intervention is required.

We present a methodology for using an ultrasonic osteotome combined with a conventional osteotome for laminectomy in thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum. This is a relatively safe and easy-to-learn method that avoids the perioperative complications associated with the conventional method.
