Muscle Length Optimization

Muscle length optimization is the process of identifying the muscle length that enables effective force production, movement, and control. It depends on the length-tension relationship: sarcomere geometry and actin-myosin overlap determine how many cross-bridges can form, while muscle spindles provide sensory feedback about length and changes in length to the nervous system. In neuroscience, this concept helps explain how the brain and spinal cord coordinate posture, reflexes, and skilled movement across changing joint positions. Understanding muscle length optimization supports research on motor control, rehabilitation, athletic performance, and the design of assistive or neuroprosthetic technologies.

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.

Optimal Foraging - Concepts

Optimal Foraging Organisms must acquire and use resources in their environment to survive. While food is one of the primary resources organisms must search for, individuals also need to seek habitats, shelter, and mates. This process of searching for resources is known as foraging, which involves a series of costs and benefits. More specifically, acquiring a resource provides the organism with a benefit, however, searching and capturing the resource requires expenditure of time and energy.

Optimal Foraging

How animals obtain and eat their food is called foraging behavior. Foraging can include searching for plants and hunting for prey and depends on the species and environment. Optimal foraging theory states that natural selection favors foraging strategies that balance the benefits of a particular food, such as energy and nutrients, with the costs of obtaining it, such as energy expenditure and the risk of predation. Optimal foraging maximizes benefits while minimizing costs. For the Crows
