Post-traumatic Seizures Mouse Model

A post-traumatic seizures mouse model is an experimental system used to study seizures that develop after traumatic brain injury, an important pathway toward post-traumatic epilepsy. Researchers create a controlled brain injury, often with a standardized impact or fluid-percussion procedure, and then monitor animals with electroencephalography and behavioral scoring for abnormal electrical activity and recurrent seizures. The injury can disrupt neural circuits, trigger inflammation, and alter synaptic balance, producing network hyperexcitability over time. These models help define seizure onset and progression, identify biomarkers, and test preventive or therapeutic interventions while linking acute tissue damage to chronic neurological dysfunction.

Handling-Induced Seizures in a Mouse Model

This video demonstrates the induction of handling-induced seizures in a mouse infected with Theiler's Murine Encephalomyelitis Virus (TMEV). The infected mouse, which has hyperexcitable neurons, is exposed to external physical stimuli. This exposure causes stress, leading to abnormal electrical activity in the neurons, which results in seizures.

This systematic protocol describes a new animal model of post-traumatic epilepsy after repetitive mild traumatic brain injury. The first part details steps for traumatic brain injury induction using a modified weight drop model. The second part provides instructions on the surgical approach for single- and multi-channel electroencephalographic data acquisition systems.

(2022)This video demonstrates the procedure to induce a closed-head injury in a mouse model using a stereotaxic frame. The controlled impact replicates mild traumatic brain injury, allowing researchers to study neurological effects and recovery by measuring post-injury reflexes and behavior.
