Scan Duration Reduction

Scan duration reduction is the systematic shortening of medical or research imaging acquisitions while preserving data quality, participant safety, and scientifically useful information. In neuroscience, it works by optimizing acquisition protocols, sampling only the measurements needed for reconstruction, and applying computational methods that recover images or signals from efficiently collected data; the balance between speed, resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and motion sensitivity is central. These strategies can improve participant comfort and compliance, reduce motion-related artifacts, and increase the number of subjects or repeated measurements feasible in a study, supporting more reliable investigations of brain structure, function, and connectivity.

Duration of Unemployment

2025

The duration of unemployment refers to the duration of the period an individual remains unemployed while actively seeking work. In the United States, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), this measure is used to find out how long individuals classified as unemployed have been actively searching for work while still being unemployed. The BLS uses an arithmetic mean to calculate the average duration of unemployment. This method involves summing the number of weeks of unemployment...

Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

2020

Oxidation–Reduction Reactions Earth’s atmosphere contains about 20% molecular oxygen, O2, a chemically reactive gas that plays an essential role in the metabolism of aerobic organisms and in many environmental processes that shape the world. The term oxidation was originally used to describe chemical reactions involving O2, but its meaning has evolved to refer to a broad and important reaction class known as oxidation–reduction (redox) reactions. Some redox reactions involve the transfer of...

Meal Duration as a Measure of Orofacial Nociceptive Responses in Rodents

A lengthening in meal duration represents orofacial nociceptive behavior in rodents similar to the guarding behavior of humans with orofacial pain. Eating is a behavior that requires no training or animal manipulation, requires cortical participation, and is not competing with other experimentally induced behaviors, distinguishing this assay from alternative reflex or operant measurements.

Leaky Scanning

During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA. Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R stands for...
