Spinal Canal Cleaning

Spinal canal cleaning refers to removing obstructive, contaminated, or excess material from the space surrounding the spinal cord and nerve roots, helping preserve neural function. Depending on the condition, clinicians may expose the canal, remove bone fragments, clots, infected tissue, tumors, or other compressive material, and use careful irrigation or suction to clear the operative field while protecting the dura and neural tissue. The approach can support decompression after trauma, treatment of infection or bleeding, and management of space-occupying lesions. Understanding these procedures is relevant to neuroscience because canal patency influences cerebrospinal fluid movement, neural compression, inflammation, and recovery.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Daniel Kim, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Organic synthesis is about transforming a readily available reagent into a more valuable product. Having clean glassware is crucial for the efficiency of this process. Dirty glassware can potentially affect the reaction and make isolation of the final product more challenging. Thus, a synthetic chemist must keep the glassware spotless. The methods described here will detail different glass cleaning...

Keeping the microscope optics clean is important for high-quality imaging. Dust, fingerprints, excess immersion oil, or mounting medium on or in a microscope causes reduction in contrast and resolution. DIC is especially sensitive to contamination and scratches on the lens surfaces. This protocol details the procedure for keeping the microscope clean.

Cleaning, Sterilization, and Disinfection

Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization are the methods that help to break the infection chain and prevent disease. Cleaning The cleaning process usually involves using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaner and removing foreign material from objects and surfaces, including organic material such as body fluids or inorganic material like soil. Cleaning is performed before high-level disinfection and sterilization because foreign materials on the cover of the devices interfere with process...

Source: Kumar, S., et. al. Mouse Model of Pressure Ulcers After Spinal Cord Injury. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates a detailed induction of spinal cord injury in mice. The anesthetized mouse is dissected to expose T9-T10 vertebrae, and their spinous processes are removed. The exposed spinal cord is then transected to inflict the injury. The surgical area is then closed, and the mouse is allowed to recover.
