Surgical Preparation

Surgical preparation is the organized process of evaluating a patient, planning an operation, and establishing the conditions needed for safe and effective surgery. It combines medical history, neurological examination, diagnostic imaging, informed consent, anesthesia planning, sterile technique, and patient positioning to reduce avoidable risks and guide intraoperative decisions. In neuroscience, careful preparation helps clinicians identify critical brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve structures before intervention, supporting accurate targeting while preserving healthy tissue. It also improves communication among surgical, anesthesia, and nursing teams, strengthens postoperative planning, and contributes to reliable outcomes in procedures used to treat tumors, vascular disorders, trauma, epilepsy, and other nervous system conditions.

The present protocol describes the maceration and cleaning of cadaveric bone with a vacuum-sealed, hot water bath immersion technique. This is a low-cost, safe, and effective method to produce anatomical specimens for surgical planning and medical education as an alternative to three-dimensional (3D) printed models.

MSC Seeded Scaffold Preparation: A Technique to Prepare Scaffold Seeded with Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Surgical Implantation into Murine Model

2025

This video describes the technique of seeding mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) onto a biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) scaffold. The prepared scaffolds can be implanted into the surgical resection cavity of the brain from where they may migrate towards tumor foci. Further, these cells can be engineered to express therapeutic proteins to stimulate apoptosis in cancer cells.
