Voluntary Ethanol Consumption

Voluntary ethanol consumption is a behavioral pattern in which an individual freely chooses to ingest alcohol, providing a model for studying the neural basis of motivation and alcohol-related behavior. In neuroscience research, animals are typically given access to ethanol alongside water or another choice, allowing investigators to measure intake, preference, and changes in consumption; ethanol can influence reward and reinforcement circuits that shape these decisions. This approach helps distinguish voluntary drinking from forced exposure and supports research on learning, stress, addiction vulnerability, and relapse-related behavior. Findings can clarify how neural circuits and pharmacological factors contribute to alcohol use and inform future therapeutic strategies.

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

Service Consumption

2024

Service consumption describes a consumer's journey when selecting, experiencing, and evaluating a service. This journey is divided into three main stages: pre-purchase, service encounter, and post-encounter. During the pre-purchase stage, consumers recognize a need, such as finding a new gym membership. They then search for information, comparing gyms based on factors like membership fees, equipment quality, class offerings, and location. This stage shapes their expectations and influences...

Consumer spending behavior is shaped by a complex interaction of economic and psychological factors. While current income, future income expectations, and accumulated wealth are primary determinants, other influential variables include interest rates, access to credit, and government fiscal policies.Interest Rates and Intertemporal ConsumptionInterest rates affect the timing of consumption decisions. Higher interest rates increase the return on savings, encouraging individuals to postpone...

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...
