Zebrafish Eye Development

Zebrafish eye development is the coordinated process by which embryonic tissues form the eye, retina, and visual neural connections, providing a useful model for studying vertebrate neurodevelopment. During embryogenesis, the optic vesicle folds into an optic cup, while retinal progenitor cells undergo proliferation, differentiation, and organized layering to produce neurons, photoreceptors, and supporting cells. Transparent embryos, rapid development, and accessible genetic and live-imaging methods allow researchers to track these events in real time and test the roles of signaling pathways and genes. This model supports research into retinal regeneration, congenital eye disorders, neurodevelopmental mechanisms, and potential treatments for visual disease.

Light sheet fluorescence microscopy is an excellent tool for imaging embryonic development. It allows recording of long time-lapse movies of live embryos in near physiological conditions. We demonstrate its application for imaging zebrafish eye development across wide spatio-temporal scales and present a pipeline for fusion and deconvolution of multiview datasets.

Zebrafish Reproduction and Development

2023

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become a popular model for studying genetics and developmental biology. The transparency of these animals at early developmental stages permits the direct visualization of tissue morphogenesis at the cellular level. Furthermore, zebrafish are amenable to genetic manipulation, allowing researchers to determine the effect of gene expression on the development of a vertebrate with a high degree of genetic similarity to humans. This video provides a brief overview of...

Lens Transplantation in Zebrafish and its Application in the Analysis of Eye Mutants

Lens development involves interactions with other tissues. Several zebrafish eye mutants are characterized by an abnormally small lens size. Here we demonstrate a lens transplantation experiment to determine whether this phenotype is due to intrinsic causes or defective interactions with tissues that surround the lens.
