Limb Placement Test

The Limb Placement Test is a behavioral assay that evaluates how effectively an animal detects sensory cues and places a limb, providing a measure of sensorimotor function in neuroscience. During testing, the experimenter positions or guides the limb toward a supporting surface and records the speed, accuracy, or presence of a corrective placement response, which depends on sensory processing, motor planning, and coordinated muscle activity. Researchers use this test to identify deficits following brain or spinal injury, examine changes in motor and sensory pathways, and assess functional recovery or treatment effects. Standardized scoring supports comparisons across experimental conditions.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...

Source: Brandli, A. Remote Limb Ischemic Preconditioning: A Neuroprotective Technique in Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates a non-invasive limb ischemic preconditioning protocol in rats to induce systemic neuroprotection. The procedure involves controlled arterial occlusion and reperfusion, triggering cellular stress pathways that release protective factors. These factors enhance resistance to ischemic and metabolic injuries in distant organs such as the brain and retina.
