Sevoflurane

Sevoflurane is a volatile inhalational anesthetic used to induce and maintain general anesthesia, particularly when rapid, controlled changes in anesthetic depth are important. It reaches the brain through the lungs and alters neuronal signaling by enhancing inhibitory pathways, including GABA-A and glycine receptor activity, while reducing excitatory neurotransmission; its low blood-gas solubility supports rapid induction and recovery. In pharmacology, sevoflurane is administered through calibrated vaporizers with continuous monitoring of ventilation, circulation, and anesthetic concentration. Its nonpungent properties make it useful for mask induction, while understanding its metabolism, dose-dependent effects, and potential adverse reactions supports safer perioperative care.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals ("The Guide") states that pain assessment and alleviation are integral components of the veterinary care of laboratory animals. The definition of anesthesia is the loss of feeling or sensation. It is a dynamic event involving changes in anesthetic depth with respect to an animal's metabolism, surgical stimulation, or variations in the...
