Angular Error Calculation

Angular error calculation is a method for quantifying the discrepancy between two directions, such as a target orientation and a participant’s response. Because angles wrap around a circle, the calculation typically subtracts one angle from the other and adjusts the result modulo 360 degrees, or 2π radians, to select the smallest signed or absolute difference. In psychology, this measure supports analysis of spatial perception, mental rotation, attention, and motor responses when researchers need to distinguish directional accuracy from response variability. Comparing angular error across conditions can reveal biases in orientation judgments and help evaluate models of cognitive representation and sensorimotor control.

Angular Momentum

2023

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Angular momentum is defined as the product of the moment of inertia and the angular velocity of the object. Like its linear analog, angular momentum is conserved, meaning that the total angular momentum of a system will not change if there are no external torques on the system. A torque is the rotational equivalent of a force. Because it is a...

Angular Momentum

Angular momentum characterizes an object's rotational motion and is defined as the moment of its linear momentum about a specified point O. When a particle moves along a curved path in the x-y plane, the scalar formulation calculates the magnitude of its angular momentum, utilizing the moment arm (d), representing the perpendicular distance from point O to the line of action of the linear momentum. Despite being scalar in formulation, angular momentum is inherently a vector quantity. Its...

Systematic Error: Methodological and Sampling Errors

2024

In the case of systematic errors, the sources can be identified, and the errors can be subsequently minimized by addressing these sources. According to the source, systematic errors can be divided into sampling, instrumental, methodological, and personal errors. Sampling errors originate from improper sampling methods or the wrong sample population. These errors can be minimized by refining the sampling strategy. Defective instruments or faulty calibrations are the sources of instrumental...

Fundamental Attribution Error

2020

According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to assume that the behavior of another person is a trait of that person, and to underestimate the power of the situation on the behavior of others. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is called the fundamental attribution...
