Question 1

What is sustained visual attention and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

Sustained visual attention is the prolonged ability to selectively process aspects of a visual scene. Unlike brief focus required for crossing a street, everyday situations like driving through busy city streets demand sustained attention. In a complex world, paying attention to certain stimuli rather than others is critical for safety and survival.

Question 2

How does the multiple object tracking experiment work?

Accepted Answer

Participants mentally track colored discs on a computer screen. Initially, identical blue discs appear; some turn yellow and become targets to track. All discs then return to blue and move for 10 seconds. Participants identify which discs they believe were targets. The tracking load—the number of targets—varies from 2 to 7 across trials.

Question 3

What is tracking load and how does it affect performance?

Accepted Answer

Tracking load refers to the number of target discs participants must track during each trial. As tracking load increases from 2 to 7 targets, performance accuracy decreases significantly. Performance approaches chance level when tracking the maximum of 7 targets, demonstrating that sustained attention becomes more difficult as scene complexity increases.

Question 4

How is performance accuracy measured in multiple object tracking?

Accepted Answer

Performance accuracy is calculated by dividing the number of targets correctly identified by the total number of targets assigned in each trial. Results are graphed as mean accuracy values plotted against tracking load. This visualization reveals how attention capacity changes with increasing task difficulty.

Question 5

What preparation steps should researchers take before testing participants?

Accepted Answer

Researchers must obtain written consent and verify participants have 20-20 vision with or without correction. Position participants approximately 60 centimeters from the monitor using floor tape to mark seat position. Explain instructions emphasizing that difficult trials require best effort and guessing when uncertain. Have participants complete five practice trials with two targets before the actual experiment.

Question 6

How does distraction affect tracking performance?

Accepted Answer

Research shows that engaging participants in conversation while performing the task significantly increases tracking errors. This demonstrates why drivers cannot remain attentive if they multitask while driving. Distraction substantially impairs sustained visual attention, revealing the limited capacity of attention when divided among competing demands.

Question 7

Can multiple object tracking reveal differences in attention abilities?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the paradigm has investigated attentional differences between individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, those receiving therapeutic interventions like Ritalin, and age-matched controls. Participants given Ritalin showed improved sustained attention, making fewer tracking errors as tracking loads increased, demonstrating the paradigm's sensitivity to attention-related conditions.
