Question 1

What is momentum and how is it calculated?

Accepted Answer

Momentum, denoted by the letter p, is the product of an object's mass and velocity. It is calculated using the equation p = mv, where m is mass and v is velocity. Since velocity is a vector quantity with direction, momentum also carries directional information indicated by positive or negative signs.

Question 2

How does Newton's second law relate to momentum change?

Accepted Answer

Newton's second law states that a net force applied to an object produces acceleration. Mathematically, this relationship shows that force equals the change in momentum over time. Therefore, applying a net external force results in a change in momentum for that object, making force and momentum change directly connected.

Question 3

When is momentum conserved in a system?

Accepted Answer

Momentum is conserved only in an isolated system unaffected by net external forces. In such systems, the total initial momentum equals the total final momentum. This principle applies to collisions between objects, where the sum of initial momenta before collision equals the sum of final momenta afterward.

Question 4

What is the difference between elastic and inelastic collisions?

Accepted Answer

In elastic collisions, both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved. Pool ball collisions exemplify this type. Inelastic collisions, like car crashes, conserve momentum but lose kinetic energy during impact. Most real-world collisions are inelastic, with energy dissipated through deformation and heat.

Question 5

How does an air track reduce experimental error in collision studies?

Accepted Answer

An air track creates a near frictionless surface by using an air supply to lift gliders slightly above the track. This minimizes friction, which would otherwise act as an external force affecting momentum measurements. The reduced friction allows the collision system to remain more isolated, making experimental results more consistent with theoretical momentum conservation.

Question 6

Why does a rocket accelerate without pushing against anything?

Accepted Answer

Rocket propulsion demonstrates momentum conservation. Initially, the rocket and fuel are at rest with zero momentum. By rapidly expelling spent fuel with mass and momentum in one direction, the rocket gains equal and opposite momentum, propelling it forward. This works in space because momentum is conserved within the rocket-fuel system regardless of external medium.

Question 7

What is recoil and how does it relate to momentum conservation?

Accepted Answer

Recoil occurs when a firearm discharges ammunition at high speed. Like the rocket-fuel system, the firearm-ammunition system starts at rest. When ammunition is fired forward, the firearm experiences opposing momentum backward to conserve total system momentum. This recoil can be powerful and demonstrates momentum conservation in everyday phenomena.
