Question 1

What is the main purpose of a heat exchanger?

Accepted Answer

A heat exchanger facilitates efficient, continuous heat transfer between two fluid streams without allowing them to mix. Two fluids enter in close thermal contact across a physical barrier, driven by local temperature differences. The hotter fluid exits at reduced temperature while the colder fluid exits at increased temperature, making heat exchangers essential for thermal management in car radiators, refrigerators, and power plants.

Question 2

How does the log mean temperature difference relate to heat exchanger analysis?

Accepted Answer

The log mean temperature difference is the average temperature difference driving heat transfer between two streams in a counter-flow tube-in-tube heat exchanger. It is calculated from the inlet and outlet temperatures of both fluid streams. This value is essential for determining overall conductance when the heat transfer rate is known, or for predicting performance in heat exchanger design and rating problems.

Question 3

What are the thermal resistances in a tube-in-tube heat exchanger?

Accepted Answer

Thermal resistances in a tube-in-tube heat exchanger consist of three components: convection in the hot fluid tube, conduction through the inner tube wall, and convection in the cold fluid annulus. The sum of these resistances determines the overall thermal resistance between the two streams. The inverse of this sum yields the overall conductance, which characterizes the heat transfer capacity of the exchanger.

Question 4

How is overall conductance determined experimentally in heat exchanger testing?

Accepted Answer

Overall conductance is determined experimentally by measuring the heat transfer rate and calculating the log mean temperature difference from inlet and outlet temperatures. The heat transfer rate is found by multiplying mass flow rate, specific heat of water, and temperature difference for each fluid stream. Dividing the average heat transfer rate by the log mean temperature difference yields the overall conductance for the heat exchanger.

Question 5

Why does heat transfer rate equality matter in heat exchanger analysis?

Accepted Answer

During steady operation with negligible heat leakage to surroundings, the heat transfer rate of the hot fluid equals the heat transfer rate of the cold fluid. This principle means any heat lost by the hot fluid is gained by the cold fluid. Verifying this equality through experimental measurement confirms energy conservation and validates the accuracy of temperature and flow rate measurements in the heat exchanger system.

Question 6

What are common applications of heat exchangers in energy systems?

Accepted Answer

Heat exchangers are employed in diverse energy applications. In power plants, steam generator heat exchangers transfer heat from high-temperature gas to produce steam for turbines, while condenser heat exchangers reject heat from low-pressure steam downstream. In refrigeration and air conditioning systems, evaporator heat exchangers absorb thermal energy from conditioned spaces. Car radiators transfer heat from engine coolant to surrounding air for cooling.

Question 7

How does flow rate affect overall conductance in laminar flow conditions?

Accepted Answer

For low-velocity laminar flows in a tube-in-tube heat exchanger, overall conductance remains relatively constant across varying flow rates. This occurs because conductance depends primarily on material thermal conductivities, geometry, and flow regime rather than flow velocity in laminar conditions. Experimental measurements typically show small standard deviations in conductance values, confirming this stability across the tested operating range.
