Question 1

What are the main structures found inside a chicken egg?

Accepted Answer

A chicken egg contains a nutrient-rich yolk surrounded by the vitelline membrane, albumen (egg white) providing water and protein, shell membranes containing keratin for bacterial defense, and a calcium carbonate shell allowing gas and moisture exchange. These structures develop during the 24-hour egg assembly process as the egg passes through the oviduct and uterus.

Question 2

How are chick developmental stages classified and measured?

Accepted Answer

Chick developmental stages are defined using the Hamburger Hamilton staging series, which classifies embryos based on morphological milestones rather than time. This system is used because development halts when eggs are exposed to cooler temperatures and only progresses during incubation at 37.5°C, making morphological features more reliable indicators of developmental progress than elapsed time.

Question 3

What happens during gastrulation in chick embryos?

Accepted Answer

During gastrulation, cells from the area pellucida migrate through a groove in the primitive streak to form three germ layers: the endoderm (lining gut and respiratory tract), mesoderm (forming muscle and blood), and ectoderm (becoming skin and neural tissue). This process begins at Hensen's node and is crucial for establishing the embryonic axis and patterning neural tissues like the neural tube.

Question 4

What role do extraembryonic membranes play in chick development?

Accepted Answer

Extraembryonic membranes support the developing embryo by transporting gases, nutrients, and wastes. The yolk sac delivers nutrients, while the allantois and chorion handle respiration and excretion. After seven days, these membranes fuse to form the chorioallantoic membrane, enabling gas exchange with the outside world and allowing the embryo to extract calcium from the shell.

Question 5

Why is the chick embryo a valuable model for developmental research?

Accepted Answer

The chick embryo provides an economical and accessible model because chickens are widely domesticated, embryos develop externally, and they are amenable to genetic and physiological manipulations. These characteristics allow researchers to investigate developmental pathways at cellular and molecular levels, making chicks ideal for studying vertebrate development processes.

Question 6

How do researchers use tissue transplantation to study chick development?

Accepted Answer

Researchers transplant tissues between embryos to demonstrate tissue function in development. A common technique involves grafting tissues from quail into chick embryos, allowing scientists to track transplanted cells using quail-specific markers and assess their impact on developmental processes like jaw formation.

Question 7

What techniques are used to visualize gene expression and neural connections in chick embryos?

Accepted Answer

RNA in situ hybridization visualizes gene expression by using RNA probes that bind to specific mRNA targets, with labels highlighting cells showing robust expression. Neural tracing involves injecting dye into neurons of interest, allowing the dye to spread through axons. Fixed, thinly sliced embryos are then immunostained to visualize neural pathways using dye labels and brain tissue markers.
