Question 1

What is the difference between simple distillation and fractional distillation?

Accepted Answer

Simple distillation uses one vaporization-condensation cycle and works best for mixtures with boiling points differing by at least 25°C or containing non-volatile solids. Fractional distillation employs multiple vaporization-condensation cycles through a fractionating column filled with glass beads or metal wool, enabling separation of liquids with boiling points closer than 25°C and achieving higher purity distillates.

Question 2

How does a fractionating column improve distillation purity?

Accepted Answer

A fractionating column provides a large surface area where vapors condense and re-evaporate multiple times as they rise. Each condensation-evaporation cycle acts as a theoretical plate, progressively enriching the vapor with more volatile compounds. This creates many theoretical plates within one apparatus, allowing three plates to achieve 99% purity compared to requiring multiple simple distillations.

Question 3

What role does volatility play in distillation separation?

Accepted Answer

Volatility, the tendency of molecules to escape from liquid into gas phase, determines separation efficiency. Heating increases molecular kinetic energy, causing more volatile compounds to vaporize first. When vapor pressure equals atmospheric pressure at the boiling point, bubbles form and the liquid vaporizes. More volatile compounds preferentially enter the vapor phase, allowing selective separation based on boiling point differences.

Question 4

Why is a boiling point diagram useful for predicting distillation outcomes?

Accepted Answer

A boiling point diagram plots temperature against liquid and vapor composition, predicting the vapor composition produced at each temperature. For example, an equal cyclohexane-toluene mixture boils at 90°C but yields 80% cyclohexane vapor. This allows chemists to predict distillate purity and determine how many theoretical plates are needed to achieve desired separation.

Question 5

How is distillate purity assessed after fractional distillation?

Accepted Answer

Distillate purity is commonly evaluated using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which identifies characteristic peaks for each compound. NMR spectra of starting mixtures show peaks for all components, while pure distillates show peaks for only the most volatile compound. This technique confirms successful separation and quantifies the composition of collected samples.

Question 6

What are practical applications of distillation beyond laboratory use?

Accepted Answer

Distillation is used in petroleum refineries for large-scale separation and in spirit production to separate ethanol from fermentation byproducts. Gas chromatography applies fractional distillation principles on a micro-scale using thousands of theoretical plates to separate volatile mixtures. Trace explosive vapors are also selectively separated using distillation principles combined with temperature desorption and cryogenic trapping.

Question 7

What key measurements are recorded during a fractional distillation procedure?

Accepted Answer

Vapor temperature is recorded continuously to monitor separation progress, with readings taken at 2 mL distillate intervals. The collection rate is maintained at 1-2 drops per second by adjusting heat. Distillate samples are collected in 4 mL increments and saved separately for later analysis, allowing chemists to track purity changes across the distillation.
