Genes can exist in different forms called alleles, and these alleles control variations in inherited traits.
Some genes have more than two alleles in a population, which creates multiple possible genetic combinations.
Even when many alleles exist in a population, each individual inherits only two alleles for a specific gene, one from each parent.
The ABO blood group system is a common example of multiple alleles in humans. This system includes three alleles: IA, IB, and i. These alleles combine in different ways to produce four blood groups.
The IA allele produces A antigens on the surface of red blood cells, while the IB allele produces B antigens. Both IA and IB are dominant over the i allele, which is recessive and does not produce either antigen.
Individuals with the genotypes IAIA or IAi develop blood group A because their red blood cells carry only A antigens. Individuals with IBIB or IBi develop blood group B because their red blood cells carry only B antigens.
People with the genotype IᴬIᴮ develop blood group AB because the Iᴬ and Iᴮ alleles are codominant. This means both alleles are expressed equally and independently. As a result, red blood cells display both A and B surface antigens.
Individuals with the genotype ii lack both A and B surface antigens on their red blood cells, so they develop blood group O. The i allele is recessive and shows its effect only when two copies are inherited together.
The presence of three alleles in the ABO blood group system, along with their dominant, recessive, and codominant interactions, results in four distinct blood group phenotypes in a population.

Multiple alleles occur when a gene exists in three or more allelic forms within a population, though diploid organisms like humans carry only two alleles per gene. For example, the beta-globin gene has several alleles including the normal allele and the sickle allele. Blood type demonstrates multiple allelism with three alleles: IA, IB, and i. These multiple forms allow for greater genetic diversity and varied phenotypic expression.
