Antigens, the proteins expressed on the surface of pathogens are made up of specific sequences of amino acids called epitopes that determine their structure.
Cross-reactivity occurs when two distinct epitopes are structurally similar enough to be recognized by the same antibody. Such an occurrence explains why an individual can have allergic immune responses to related allergens such as walnuts and pecans.
Furthermore, cross-reactive interactions may enhance immunity by providing protection against related pathogens including various strains of the flu.
