Q1: What is hyaline cartilage and what are its main functions?
Hyaline cartilage is a pliable, avascular connective tissue that protects the ends of long bones and enables smooth joint movements. It forms the fetal skeleton and reduces friction between bones while providing flexibility to joints. Hyaline cartilage is found in the nose, rib ends, and joint surfaces throughout the skeleton.
Q2: How do chondrocytes form cartilage tissue?
Chondrocytes form when mesenchymal stem cells or fibroblasts differentiate into specialized cells. These chondrocytes divide and secrete a thick gel-like extracellular matrix. Once chondrocytes increase in volume 5-12 fold and form the general bone shape, called a cartilaginous model, they stop dividing and eventually undergo apoptosis.
Q3: What is endochondral ossification and how does it replace cartilage with bone?
Endochondral ossification is the process of replacing the temporary cartilaginous model with bone tissue in an ordered manner. After chondrocytes undergo programmed cell death, blood vessels enter the degenerating cartilage, bringing osteoblasts that synthesize osteoid, an organic matrix of collagen. Osteoblasts deposit increasing layers of osteoid through apposition, which calcifies into bone.
Q4: What happens to osteoblasts after they deposit bone matrix?
Some osteoblasts remain buried in the calcified bone matrix and transform into osteocytes. These cells play major roles in bone and mineral homeostasis and bone remodeling. Osteocytes maintain the integrity of bone tissue and regulate mineral balance within the skeletal system.
Q5: Why does cartilage heal more slowly than bone tissue?
Cartilage is avascular, meaning it lacks blood vessels, so nutrients must diffuse into the tissue rather than being delivered directly. This slow nutrient diffusion delays healing. Additionally, cartilage is incapable of regeneration, unlike bone tissue which continuously undergoes remodeling through bone remodeling processes.
Q6: What are the different types of cartilage and where are they found?
Elastic cartilage maintains the shape of flexible body parts such as the external ears and larynx. Hyaline cartilage is present in the nose, rib ends, and joint surfaces. Fibrous cartilage is found in intervertebral discs and ligaments. Each type performs specific protective and supportive functions throughout the body.
Q7: What are the stages of bone healing after a fracture?
Bone healing occurs in several stages: hematoma formation, fibrocartilaginous callus formation, bony callus formation, and bone remodeling. The final stage, bone remodeling, is the longest and involves endochondral ossification. This process gradually replaces temporary cartilage and fibrous tissue with mature bone.
