The wall of the large intestine comprises four layers: the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa.
The mucosa, lined by intestinal glands, consists of simple columnar epithelium, lamina propria made of areolar connective tissue, and muscularis mucosae made of smooth muscle.
The epithelium of the mucosa contains absorptive cells, which lack villi but possess microvilli, and goblet cells, which secrete mucus.
In contrast, the mucosa of the distal end of the anal canal is lined with stratified squamous epithelium which helps prevent abrasion and friction caused by the passage of feces.
The submucosa of the large intestine is made of areolar connective tissue, providing support and elasticity.
The muscularis has an external layer of longitudinal smooth muscle and an internal layer of circular smooth muscle. The longitudinal muscles form three distinct bands called the teniae coli.
Contractions in the teniae coli generate a series of pouches called haustra, giving the colon its distinctive puckered appearance.
The serosa is part of the visceral peritoneum. Small pouches of this peritoneum filled with fat, known as omental appendices, are attached to the teniae coli.
