Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to obtain detailed images of the lung that help diagnose conditions like pulmonary nodules, bronchogenic carcinoma, and inflammatory lung diseases.
The following are the nursing responsibilities for an MRI scan.
First, instruct the patient to remove metallic items and screen them for any implants for safety.
Inform the patient to lie still during the scan.
A post-procedure consultation with the primary provider is needed to determine if the patient should remain nothing by mouth after the test.
Alternatively, Ventilation Perfusion or V/Q scans involve injecting a radioactive agent and inhaling a radioactive gas to assess the perfusion and ventilation.
V/Q scans help diagnose bronchitis, asthma, inflammatory fibrosis, pneumonia, and emphysema.
The nursing responsibilities for the V/Q scan are as follows.
Before the scan, it is imperative to establish intravenous access and ensure a chest x-ray is performed.
During the procedure, advise the patient to inhale a radioactive gas.
After the procedure, fluid intake should be encouraged to help eliminate radioisotopes through urine.
