Echocardiography is a technique that helps detect cardiac issues. Here are some types of echocardiography.
Transthoracic echocardiography involves applying a conductive gel and placing a transducer on the chest to evaluate heart size, structure, and motion to diagnose heart failure and valve disease.
Next is transesophageal echocardiography, in which a transducer is inserted into the esophagus to examine heart valves, detect blood clots, and evaluate congenital heart disease.
Stress echocardiography integrates physical exercise or medication-induced stress, like dobutamine, with imaging to detect coronary artery disease and assess ischemia.
The medication-induced test is beneficial for patients who are unable to perform exercise.
Contrast echocardiography involves using an intravenous contrast agent to enhance image quality. It helps obese patients or those whose heart structures are not visible with standard echocardiography.
Finally, a bubble study, a subtype of contrast echocardiography, involves injecting microbubbles into the vein to detect abnormal heart passages, such as a patent foramen ovale.
