Ultrasonography, or renal ultrasound of the urinary system, is a noninvasive imaging technique that provides comprehensive images of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and surrounding tissues.
Before the procedure, the nurse educates the patient about the process and its duration, which is typically 20-25 minutes.
Additionally, instruct the patient to drink plenty of water to fill the bladder, as a full bladder ensures a clearer view of the bladder and surrounding structures.
During the procedure, assist the patient lying supine on the examination table.
Expose the abdominal area over the bladder and apply a water-based gel to this area.
The sonographer then places the transducer on the bladder and emits sound waves that bounce off internal structures, creating real-time images on a monitor.
These images can help diagnose conditions such as urolithiasis, hydronephrosis, chronic kidney disease, hematuria, and prostate enlargement.
After the procedure, encourage the patient to empty their bladder.
Document findings and schedule follow-up appointments to discuss results with the healthcare provider.
