Coupon payments are regular interest payments made to bond investors, typically annually or semi-annually. They are calculated by multiplying the bond's face value by its coupon rate. Fixed-rate coupons maintain a constant interest rate throughout the bond's life, offering stable and predictable income. Variable rates provide flexibility but introduce uncertainty about future payment amounts, making them suitable for different investor preferences.

Bonds are classified by their price relative to face value. Par value bonds sell at face value, discount bonds sell below face value, and premium bonds sell above face value. Bond maturity refers to the time remaining until the issuer repays the principal amount, or face value, to the investor.
