Meiosis I

Meiosis is a type of cell division that occurs in reproductive cells. This process creates four new cells, each with half the number of chromosomes.

It occurs in two stages: Meiosis I and Meiosis II.

In this lesson, let's learn about Meiosis I, which has four stages.

First comes Prophase I, where homologous chromosomes—pairs of chromosomes similar in size, shape, and genetic content—pair up and exchange genetic material through crossing over.

During this stage, spindle fibers form from the centrosomes, and the nuclear envelope disappears

Next is Metaphase I, where the homologous chromosome pairs align at the center of the cell.

During Anaphase I, the homologous chromosomes are pulled apart by spindle fibers towards opposite cell poles, ensuring that each side of the cell receives one set of chromosomes.

Finally, in Telophase I, the spindle fibers break down, and the nuclear membrane may or may not form around the chromosomes.

After this, the cell divides, producing two haploid cells, each with half the original chromosome number and a unique combination of genetic material.
