The ISS is a large, habitable spacecraft and science laboratory that orbits the Earth.
Since ISS was built piece by piece, to construct and supply it, NASA needed a spacecraft to carry large equipment into orbit. This led to the creation of the space shuttle, a reusable spacecraft that can take huge cargo.
The space shuttle had three parts: an orbiter with wings, a massive fuel tank that carries fuel, and two booster rockets to power it beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
Once in space, astronauts aboard the shuttle can deploy satellites, deliver space station parts, repair telescopes like Hubble, and conduct experiments. When the mission is complete, the orbiter glides back to Earth.
From 1981 to 2011, the space shuttle program completed 135 missions with five operational orbiters. Three orbiters that survived the missions were retired and are now available for public visits.
