In the early 20th century, Edwin Hubble discovered that many objects called ”nebulae” were not gas clouds but groups of stars called galaxies.
Today, astronomers estimate 100 to 200 billion galaxies in the observable universe. That’s approximately the same number as the stars in the Milky Way.
