Predicting Weather

Numerical weather prediction, NWP is a method of forecasting the weather using supercomputers and mathematical models.

These supercomputers collect massive amounts of data from different sources like weather stations, satellites, and balloons.

This data includes temperature, air pressure, wind speed, and humidity at different altitudes and locations.

The computer breaks the Earth into a grid with points 10 to 200 kilometers apart.

The model calculates what will happen to the atmosphere at each grid point over time.

The program then uses those results to predict what will happen next, exploring the future step by step.

These predictions are updated regularly and shared through satellites to weather stations worldwide.

Meteorologists study these forecasts and add their knowledge to improve the accuracy before sharing them with the public.

This method gives us the most reliable forecasts we have today, even though it’s not always perfect.

Predicting events like hurricanes early helps people prepare, evacuate if needed, and stay safe.
