Effect of Continental Position on Climate

Oceans play a major role in shaping the climate of nearby land areas, especially along the coast.

Places close to the ocean usually have milder climates than areas farther inland. This is because water heats up and cools down more slowly than land.

As a result, in summer, the ocean helps keep nearby areas cooler, while in winter, it helps keep them warmer.

Coastal areas often experience more rainfall as moist air from the ocean moves inland.

This type of climate, marked by mild temperatures and high rainfall, is known as a maritime climate.

In contrast, inland areas often have hotter summers and colder winters and receive less rainfall. This is known as a continental climate and results from land heating and cooling more rapidly than water.

Ocean currents also influence climate by moving warm or cold water across the world's oceans. These currents can make the climate of certain areas much warmer or colder.

One example is the Gulf Stream, which carries warm water from the equator toward the poles, warming nearby land.
