Establishing an active HIV infection in a rat model enables mechanistic de-risking of CNS-targeted antiviral strategies by providing a disease-relevant system to study viral replication, neuroinflammation, and blood-brain barrier penetration. This preclinical model supports target validation and lead identification for therapies addressing HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders, improving predictive confidence in early discovery. The model facilitates translational continuity from in vitro findings to in vivo efficacy testing, reducing biological ambiguity in CNS drug development pipelines.
The method fits within the discovery continuum from target validation through lead identification to preclinical efficacy testing, supporting iterative refinement of CNS-active antiviral candidates.
