Genes, traits, and Mendel's rules explain how characteristics pass from parents to offspring. Gregor Mendel's pea plant experiments changed how scientists understand heredity. His work showed that traits are controlled by discrete units inside organisms called genes.

Genes usually come in pairs. One gene is inherited from each parent, and together they make a person's genotype. Genotype is the genetic blueprint for potential traits. Examples include blood type, eye color, and inherited diseases. A child may inherit genes that lead to brown, blue, or green eyes.

Phenotype is the observable result. It includes physical features and behavior. Phenotype comes from both genes and environmental influences. Nutrition and climate can affect how traits appear.

Dominance helps explain why some traits show up more often than others. A dominant gene can mask the effect of a different gene in the pair. In humans, brown eyes are dominant over blue eyes. A child with one brown-eye gene and one blue-eye gene will usually have brown eyes. If both brown-eyed parents carry the recessive blue-eye gene, they can still have a blue-eyed child. Curly hair is another example of a dominant trait over straight hair.

Not every trait follows a simple pattern. Psychological traits such as intelligence, temperament, and some behavior tendencies are influenced by multiple genes. Each gene adds a small effect, which helps create the wide range of human personalities and behaviors. This makes these traits hard to predict from parental genes alone.

Gene expression is also shaped by epigenetics. Epigenetics changes how genes are turned on or off without changing the DNA sequence itself. This layer of control helps explain why genes can act differently in different cells and at different stages of development.
