Furthermore, the application of evolutionary psychology in explaining modern behaviors raises ethical and practical concerns. For instance, explaining men&#39;s misconduct in relationships as a product of evolutionary pressures can be problematic. It risks excusing inappropriate behaviors by attributing them to innate tendencies supposedly selected through evolution, potentially hindering efforts to address and reform such behaviors. As well as this, not all traits and behaviors can be advantageous or directly explainable by natural selection, as evidenced by non-reproductive behaviors such as suicide.
This dichotomy between evolutionary psychology and social learning theory in interpreting human sexual behavior underscores the complexity of human actions and motivations. The debate between innate predispositions versus learned behaviors continues to stimulate discussions in both academic circles and practical applications, reflecting broader societal implications concerning gender norms, sexual conduct, and personal accountability.

Social learning theory and evolutionary psychology offer two different ways to explain sexual behavior. A study in which strangers gave students compliments and then asked for casual sex showed a clear gender gap. None of the women said yes, while 70% of the men agreed.

Evolutionary psychology explains this result by arguing that natural selection may have shaped women to be more selective about sexual partners. From this view, selectivity can help improve survival and reproductive success. It may also help pass on genes to future generations.

However, evolutionary psychology has critics. Some psychologists argue that it can work backward from behavior to explanation. In other words, it may fit a story to the result instead of starting with unbiased evidence.

Social learning theory gives a different explanation. Social learning means people learn by watching others and by absorbing culture. For example, women may learn that unfamiliar men can be risky, that casual sex may not be rewarding, and that it may hurt their reputation more than it would for men.

This theory also suggests that men may learn the idea that &quot;real men&quot; should take every sexual chance. The debate between learned behavior and inborn tendencies is important here. It also raises ethical concerns, because explaining bad relationship behavior as the product of evolution can sound like excusing it. Not every behavior can be traced to natural selection, and non-reproductive behaviors such as suicide show that human actions are more complex than one simple explanation.
