Neurons, the excitable cells of the nervous system, specialize in transmitting information through electrical and chemical signals in the body.
A neuron is comprised of three fundamental parts&#8211; the cell body, the dendrites, and the axon.
The cell body, or soma, contains the cytoplasm and the nucleus, which generate substances needed for the growth and maintenance of the neuron.
Dendrites, extending from the cell body like branches of a tree, receive information from other neurons. Their increased surface area facilitates connections with numerous neurons.
The axon transmits information away from the cell body to other neurons or muscles. For instance, it can stretch over three feet, associating the brain with the spinal cord and featuring several branches to communicate with multiple cells.
A thin, semipermeable membrane envelops neuronal cytoplasm and features channels that allow selective passage of substances.
Most axons are wrapped in a myelin sheath, a layer of fat-containing cells that insulates and speeds up nerve impulse transmission by preventing signal loss and enabling faster impulse travel along the axon.

The cytoplasm surrounding the nucleus is packed with organelles that produce proteins and neurotransmitters essential for neuron growth, repair, and communication.
Dendrites
Extending from the soma are dendrites, which resemble the branches of a tree. These structures are designed to maximize surface area, allowing for the reception of signals from multiple neurons at the same time. The Dendrites area is crucial in collecting and directing information back to the neuron&#39;s core, where it can be processed and transmitted to other parts of the nervous system.
Axon
The axon is a long, slender projection that extends from the cell body and specializes in transmitting electrical signals away from the neuron. These signals can travel over considerable distances &#8212; for example, from the brain to the spinal cord. Axons may vary significantly in length, with some reaching up to three feet or more. They often branch out to communicate with multiple target cells, ensuring that messages are distributed across the nervous system. Most axons are wrapped in a myelin sheath to enhance the speed and efficiency of signal transmission. This fatty layer acts as an insulator, reducing signal loss and accelerating the movement of electrical impulses along the axon through a process known as saltatory conduction.
Surrounding the neuron is a semipermeable membrane that controls the internal environment of the cell by regulating the ions and molecules that enter and leave. This membrane features specialized channels and pumps that play critical roles in generating nerve impulses, which are crucial for neuron-to-neuron communication. Together, these features enable the neuron to perform its vital role as the communicator of the nervous system, impacting every action and reaction within the human body.

Neurons are the cells that carry information through the brain and nervous system. They use electrical and chemical signals to help control body functions, from heartbeat regulation to complex thinking. Their structure is built for fast, efficient communication.

The cell body, or soma, is the neuron’s control center. It contains the nucleus, which holds the cell’s genetic material and helps maintain the neuron’s health and function. The cytoplasm around it contains organelles that make proteins and neurotransmitters needed for growth, repair, and communication.

Dendrites extend from the soma like tree branches. Their shape gives them a large surface area, so they can receive signals from many neurons at once. They collect information and carry it back toward the neuron’s core for processing.

The axon is a long, slender extension that sends electrical signals away from the cell body. These signals can travel long distances, such as from the brain to the spinal cord, and some axons can reach three feet or more. Axons may also branch so they can pass messages to multiple target cells.

Most axons are covered by a myelin sheath, a fatty insulating layer that improves signal speed and efficiency. Myelin reduces signal loss and helps impulses move by saltatory conduction, which allows the signal to jump along the axon. The neuron’s semipermeable membrane also matters because it controls which ions and molecules enter or leave. Specialized channels and pumps in this membrane help generate nerve impulses, making neuron-to-neuron communication possible.
