In contrast, where neurotransmitter effects are localized, the effects of hormones are widespread.
Among the major glands of the endocrine system are the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, and gonads, each playing unique and crucial roles. The pituitary gland, often termed the &#39;master gland,&#39; is about the size of a pea and is located at the base of the brain, just below the hypothalamus. It directs the function of other endocrine glands by secreting various hormones, including growth hormones that affect physical development and endorphins that help in pain relief.
The thyroid gland, situated at the front of the neck, produces hormones that are vital for regulating metabolism, growth, and appetite. The endocrine system is a network of glands that send hormone signals through the body. Hormones are chemical messengers that help control many body functions. They enter the bloodstream and travel to cells with the right receptors, or target sites, so the signal can be received. Because of this, hormone effects are widespread, unlike the more localized effects of neurotransmitters. This signaling helps the body keep a stable internal environment, called homeostasis.

Several major glands belong to the endocrine system. The pituitary gland is often called the master gland. It is about the size of a pea and sits at the base of the brain, below the hypothalamus. It directs other endocrine glands by releasing hormones, including growth hormone for physical development and endorphins that help with pain relief.

The thyroid gland is located at the front of the neck. It makes hormones that help regulate metabolism, growth, and appetite. Proper thyroid function is important for energy use and metabolic rate. If the thyroid is underactive or overactive, a person may have unexpected weight gain or loss, fatigue, or problems with body temperature control.

The adrenal glands sit above each kidney. They produce epinephrine, also called adrenaline, and norepinephrine, also called noradrenaline. These hormones help the body respond to stress by triggering the fight-or-flight response. Heart rate, blood pressure, and energy availability rise. For example, if a person faces a barking dog, these hormones help the body prepare to fight the threat or run away. Problems with these glands can lead to Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome.
