Adaptive Estimation Procedure

An adaptive estimation procedure is a data-collection method that continually adjusts the conditions of a behavioral task to estimate a participant’s ability, threshold, or decision parameter efficiently. After each response, the procedure uses the current pattern of correct, incorrect, or other behavioral outcomes to select the next stimulus level, often concentrating trials near the point being estimated. This response-contingent design can reduce unnecessary testing while preserving information about performance and uncertainty. In behavioral research, adaptive estimation supports measurements of sensory thresholds, discrimination, learning, and decision-making, making experiments more efficient and potentially less burdensome than fixed, nonadaptive designs.

DiRita1 1 Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Michigan State University Bacteria have the ability to exchange genetic material (DeoxyriboNucleic Acid, DNA) in a process known as horizontal gene transfer. Incorporating exogenous DNA provides a mechanism by which bacteria can acquire new genetic traits that allow them to adapt to changing environmental conditions, such as the presence of antibiotics...

What are Estimates?

It isn't easy to measure a parameter such as the mean height or the mean weight of a population. So, we draw samples from the population and calculate the mean height or mean weight of the individuals in the sample. This sample data acts as a representative measure of the population parameter. These sample statistics are known as estimates. The estimate for the mean of a sample is denoted by ͞x, whereas the mean of the population is designated as μ. Further, parameters such as the mean,...

Here we describe a molecular readout of long-term olfactory adaptation in Caenorhabditis elegans. The Protein Kinase G, EGL-4, is necessary for stable adaptation responses in the primary sensory neuron pair called AWC. During prolonged odor exposure EGL-4 translocates from the cytosol to nucleus of the AWC.

The Precision of Visual Working Memory with Delayed Estimation

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human memory is limited. Throughout most of its history, experimental psychology has focused on investigating the discrete, quantitative limits of memory—how many individual pieces of information a person can remember. Recently, experimental psychologists have also become interested in more qualitative limits—how precisely is information stored? The concept of memory precision can be both intuitive and elusive at once. It is...
