Child Adolescent Mri

Child and adolescent MRI uses magnetic resonance imaging to produce detailed, noninvasive images of the developing brain and support scientific study of behavior. A strong magnetic field aligns hydrogen nuclei, radiofrequency pulses briefly disturb this alignment, and emitted signals are converted into structural images; functional MRI also detects blood-oxygenation changes during tasks or rest. In behavioral research, these methods help relate brain development to attention, emotion, learning, social behavior, and cognition. Age-appropriate protocols and strategies to reduce head motion improve data quality, strengthening research on typical development and neurodevelopmental conditions.

Despite an increase in the use of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans, the study of young pediatric populations remains a challenge. We present a hands-on, step-by-step video protocol including guidelines for clinicians and researchers intending to perform (f)MRI in young children.

Toddler and Preschool Child Exam

2023

Source: Heather Collette and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The key to a successful exam of a toddler or preschool-age child is building rapport and trust between them and the provider. Toddlers, in particular, may be wary of strangers and unwilling to cooperate with the physical exam, which is expected age-appropriate behavior. In order to provide good care and create a comfortable patient experience, clinicians need to tailor their interaction to the child's developmental stage.

Here, we present a protocol that provoked cortisol reactivity in a vulnerable adolescent Mexican American sample utilizing a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Saliva samples were collected at baseline, 15, 30, and 45 min post-TSST onset. Future research could utilize this modified TSST with vulnerable youth.

Source: Heather Collette and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The adolescent module will focus on techniques to promote a trusting provider-patient relationship and foster healthcare autonomy as teenagers approach adulthood. While most of the basic components of the physical exam in adolescents are similar to those in adults, there is an added focus on pubertal development through the use of the Sexual Maturity Rating scale. Important adolescent psychosocial screening questions,...
