Chronic Infusion Model

A chronic infusion model is an experimental method that delivers a substance continuously or repeatedly over an extended period to examine its sustained effects in living organisms. Typically, an implanted catheter or cannula connects to an infusion pump, allowing a controlled dose to enter the body while minimizing repeated handling and fluctuations in exposure. In behavioral research, this approach helps investigators assess how prolonged drug, hormone, or other biologically active compound exposure alters activity, learning, motivation, anxiety-like responses, or dependence-related behaviors. By modeling long-term treatment or exposure, chronic infusion studies can reveal behavioral adaptations and mechanisms that short-term administration may not capture.
