Cold Pressor Task

The Cold Pressor Task is a controlled experimental method used to study pain, stress reactivity, and behavioral responses by exposing a participant to a brief, standardized cold stimulus. Typically, the participant immerses a hand or forearm in cold water, activating peripheral cold and pain receptors and producing sympathetic nervous system responses such as changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and pain ratings. In behavioral research, investigators use tolerance time, pain intensity, and physiological measures to examine individual differences in coping, emotion regulation, stress sensitivity, and decision-making. The task provides a reproducible model for investigating interactions between bodily stress responses and behavior.

Human pain models are valuable tools used to assess the analgesic potential of novel compounds and predict their clinical efficacy, especially when used in an integrated manner. Although implementation of these models is complex, with proper execution, the pain models described in this protocol can provide predictive and reliable results.

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Jean Piaget was a pioneer in the field of developmental psychology, and his theory of cognitive development is one of the most well-known psychological theories. At the heart of Piaget’s theory is the idea that children’s ways of thinking change over the course of childhood. Piaget provided evidence for these changes by comparing how children of different ages responded to questions and problems that he...

For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...
