Corneal Reflection

Corneal reflection is the small image of a light source formed on the curved, transparent surface of the eye, and it provides a noninvasive reference for measuring gaze. In video-based eye tracking, a camera records this reflection, often called a first Purkinje image, together with the pupil; changes in their relative positions indicate changes in eye orientation and help estimate where a person is looking. In behavioral research, corneal-reflection methods quantify fixation, saccades, visual attention, and scan paths during tasks such as reading or scene viewing. These measurements support objective analysis of perception, decision-making, and interactions with visual environments.

Source: Derek Wilson, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Light travels at different speeds depending on the material through which it is propagating. When light travels from one material to another, it will either slow down or speed up. In order to conserve energy and momentum, the light must change the direction in which it propagates. This bending of light is known as refraction. Some fraction of the...

2012

Endothelial corneal transplantation is a surgical technique for treatment of posterior corneal diseases. Mechanical microkeratome dissection to prepare tissue results in thinner, more symmetric grafts with less endothelial cell loss and improved outcomes. Dissections can be performed at the eye bank prior to corneal transplantation surgery.

Neovascularization (NV) of the cornea can complicate multiple visual pathologies. Utilizing a controlled, alkali-burn injury model, a quantifiable level of corneal NV can be produced for mechanistic study of corneal NV and evaluation of potential therapies for neovascular disorders.

Laser-assisted Selective Ablation of Porcine Corneal Endothelial Cells: A Technique to Induce Focused Porcine Corneal Endothelial Injury for Ex Vivo Studies

2025

This video demonstrates a non-invasive laser-assisted procedure to selectively damage the corneal endothelial cells in the porcine eye. The developed ex vivo model of endothelial cell damage can be used to study diseases of the corneal endothelium.
