Video Camera Recording

Video camera recording is a method for capturing and storing moving images over time, creating a durable record of behavior for later observation and analysis. Light from a scene passes through a lens to an electronic image sensor, which converts it into digital frames that can be stored and reviewed. In behavioral research, cameras document actions, movement, social interactions, and responses to controlled conditions, while consistent positioning and recording settings support comparable observations. Researchers can review footage repeatedly, code events, and examine patterns that may be difficult to identify during live observation, supporting more objective and reproducible analysis.

This protocol describes how to build a small and versatile video camera, and how to use videos obtained from it to train a neural network to track the position of an animal inside operant conditioning chambers. This is a valuable complement to standard analyses of data logs obtained from operant conditioning tests.
