Dental Wax Attachment

Dental wax attachment is a temporary technique for securing lightweight objects, markers, or experimental components to teeth or other oral structures during behavioral studies. Researchers soften the wax, mold it around the attachment site, and allow it to cool and harden, creating a reversible hold without permanent bonding or extensive intervention. This approach can support observations of feeding, biting, grooming, or other oral behaviors while helping maintain the subject’s natural movement. Because the attachment is adjustable and removable, dental wax can provide a practical option for short-term behavioral experiments that require localized placement and minimal disruption.

Attachment

2025

Attachment is vital for infant development, as warm social interactions support growth and well-being. In a classic 1958 study by Harry Harlow, the significance of warmth and comfort in forming attachments was examined. Harlow separated newborn monkeys from their mothers and provided two artificial "mothers": one made of cold wire and the other covered in soft cloth. Despite the wire mother offering food, the infant monkeys preferred the comfort of the cloth mother, demonstrating that physical...

Source: Matthysse, A. G. Adherence of Bacteria to Plant Surfaces Measured in the Laboratory. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the evaluation of bacterial attachment to plant roots using phase-contrast microscopy. Root samples from seedlings incubated with bacteria are first mounted to check for free bacteria. The samples are then washed to remove loosely attached bacteria and remounted using a suitable coverslip to prevent damage. Finally, the number of bacteria attached to the root...

Establishing a Co-Culture of Dental Pulp Cells and Trigeminal Neurons for Cross-Communication

This video showcases a technique for establishing a co-culture of trigeminal neurons and primary dental pulp cells using a transwell filter. In this physically separated condition, mesenchymal cells obtained from dental pulp tissue secrete paracrine signaling molecules that traverse through the pores, promoting the differentiation and migration of neurons towards the mesenchymal cells establishing a co-culture system.
