Ear Mold Plugging

Ear mold plugging is a behavioral research technique that uses a fitted mold or plug to occlude the ear canal and modify an animal’s access to auditory information. By reducing sound transmission into the ear, the procedure helps researchers test how hearing contributes to communication, orientation, learning, and other behaviors. Investigators can compare responses before and after plugging, or between plugged and control subjects, while monitoring the fit and minimizing discomfort or unintended sensory effects. This approach provides a controlled way to separate auditory cues from visual, chemical, or tactile signals and to clarify the role of hearing in behavioral experiments.

Formation of the Platelet Plug

The platelet phase, the second stage of hemostasis, commences around 15-20 seconds after an injury. It follows and overlaps with the vascular phase, during which blood vessels constrict to minimize blood loss. As the injured blood vessel contracts, endothelial cells undergo contraction, revealing collagen fibers in the basement membrane and underlying connective tissue. Furthermore, the plasma membrane of endothelial cells becomes adhesive, preparing the site for platelet adhesion. Platelets...

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video describes the examination of the ear, beginning with a review of its surface and interior anatomy (Figure 1). The cartilaginous auricle consists of the helix, antihelix, earlobe, and tragus. The mastoid process is positioned just behind the earlobe. The slightly curving auditory canal ends at the tympanic membrane, which transmits sound...
