Eight Week Stress Exposure

Eight-week stress exposure is a behavioral research paradigm that examines how repeated or sustained stress affects organisms over an extended period. In this approach, experimental subjects experience stressors according to a defined schedule, allowing researchers to evaluate cumulative responses, adaptation, and changes that may not emerge after a single stressful event. Behavioral assessments conducted during or after the exposure period can reveal effects on stress reactivity, motivation, learning, social interaction, and related outcomes. The paradigm supports research on chronic stress, resilience, and vulnerability, while helping clarify how prolonged environmental challenges influence behavior and inform models of stress-related disorders.

Source: Yan, Z., et al. Evaluating the Anti-depression Effect of Xiaoyaosan on Chronically-stressed Mice. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).The video demonstrates the process of establishing a mouse model of chronic stress-induced depression and assessing depressive behaviors. The chronic application of various stressors triggers the release of corticosterone, leading to neuronal over-excitation and eventual neuronal death, which results in depression-like symptoms in the mice.

Here, we describe the protocol and implementation of Methyl-Seq, an epigenomic platform, using a rat model to identify epigenetic changes associated with chronic stress exposure. Results demonstrate that the rat Methyl-Seq platform is capable of detecting methylation differences that arise from stress exposure in rats.

Modeling Social Stress

2023

Stress negatively affects our quality of life. In particular, some individuals experience social stress when placed in a social environment that they are unfamiliar with or have difficulty adjusting to. Since it is hard to examine mechanisms of social stress in humans, modeling this condition in animals may help scientist in developing new therapies for treating this commonly encountered problem. This science education video begins by discussing the known anatomy and physiology behind stress...
