Electrode Impedance Monitoring

Electrode impedance monitoring is a measurement technique that assesses the opposition to electrical current at the electrode-tissue interface, helping verify signal quality in behavioral research. It typically applies a small alternating current and measures the resulting voltage to estimate impedance, which varies with electrode contact, placement, materials, and tissue conditions. Monitoring these values helps researchers identify poor contact, unstable electrodes, and movement-related artifacts before or during recordings such as electroencephalography or electromyography. Reliable impedance measurements improve the interpretation of neural and physiological signals, supporting more consistent links between brain or body activity and observed behavior.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...
