Home Cage Testing

Home cage testing is a behavioral assessment approach that measures animals in their familiar housing environment, reducing the handling and novelty associated with conventional laboratory assays. Cameras, motion sensors, or other automated systems continuously record behaviors such as locomotor activity, social interactions, feeding, and sleep across day-night cycles, allowing analysis under relatively natural conditions. In behavioral research, these measurements support long-term monitoring, baseline characterization, and detection of subtle changes linked to genetics, disease, treatment, or environmental conditions. Home cage testing can therefore improve behavioral phenotyping while capturing patterns that brief, researcher-directed tests may miss.

The Thoracic Cage: Sternum

2023

The thoracic or rib cage forms the body's thorax (chest) portion. Its primary function in the body is to protect vital organs in the thoracic cavity, such as the heart and the lungs. It consists of 12 pairs of ribs with their costal cartilages and the sternum. The ribs are anchored posteriorly to the 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1-T12). The sternum is the elongated bony structure on the anterior side of the thoracic cage. It consists of three parts: the manubrium, the body, and the xiphoid process.

The Thoracic Cage: Ribs

Ribs are curved, flattened bones forming the thoracic cavity wall with the thoracic muscles. There are 12 pairs of thoracic ribs. The posterior ends of all the ribs articulate with the T1–T12 thoracic vertebrae. In contrast, the anterior ends of most ribs attach to the sternum via their costal cartilages. Parts of a Typical Rib A typical rib has a head, neck, and body. The posterior end of the rib is called the head, followed by a narrow neck. The head articulates primarily with the costal facet...

Anxiety Testing

2023

Anxiety is a commonly observed behavioral disorder that stems from fear. It is described as increased restlessness, or unpleasant feelings of fear over anticipated events. Experimenters often use rodent models to better understand anxiety disorders in humans. They use different paradigms, like exposing rodents to bright spaces or loud sounds, which are known to induce fear. These tests combined with other interventions such as surgery or drug-administration may assist researchers in pinpointing...

Flash Photolysis of Caged Compounds in the Cilia of Olfactory Sensory Neurons

Photolysis of caged compounds allows the production of rapid and localized increases in the concentration of various physiologically active compounds. Here, we show how to obtain patch-clamp recordings combined with photolysis of caged cAMP or caged Ca for the study of olfactory transduction in dissociated mouse olfactory sensory neurons.
