Estrus Female Exposure

Estrus female exposure is a behavioral paradigm in which an animal, typically a male, encounters a female during estrus, the phase of the reproductive cycle when she is sexually receptive. The female’s reproductive state provides sensory cues, including odors, vocalizations, and behavior, that can activate sexual motivation and shape the observer’s neural, hormonal, and behavioral responses. Researchers use this controlled exposure to assess courtship, investigation, mounting, and other social behaviors, as well as changes in reproductive physiology. The paradigm supports studies of sexual motivation, mate recognition, learning, and the neural mechanisms underlying reproductive behavior.

The vulva encompasses the external structures of the female reproductive system. At the forefront is the monpubis, a cushion of fatty tissue atop the pubic bone. Once puberty sets in, this area typically grows hair. Extending from just behind the mons pubis are the labia majora (labia = 'lips'; majora = 'larger'), which are larger skin fs olds coated with hair. Nestled within are the labia minora (labia = 'lips'; minora = 'smaller'), which are thinner, more pigmented, and hairless. While the...

Reverse genetic approaches have proven extremely useful for determining which genes underly resistance to vector pathogens in mosquitoes. This video protocol illustrates a method used by the James lab to inject dsRNA into female A. aegypti mosquitoes, which harbor the dengue virus. The technique for calibrating injection needles, manipulating the injection setup, and injecting dsRNA into the thorax is illustrated.
