Food Preference Test

A food preference test is a behavioral method used to measure how strongly an organism chooses one food, flavor, or nutrient source over another. During the test, subjects receive controlled access to two or more options, and researchers quantify selection through measures such as consumption, choice frequency, or time spent feeding. Standardizing hunger state, food amount, position, and testing conditions helps distinguish genuine preference from novelty, accessibility, or side bias. These tests support research on feeding behavior, nutrition, learning, and sensory biology, while also helping assess how genetic, environmental, or physiological factors influence dietary choices.

We present a protocol for a two-choice feeding assay for flies. This feeding assay is fast and easy to run and is suitable not only for small-scale laboratory research, but also for high-throughput behavioral screens in flies.

The CApillary FEeder (CAFE) Assay: A Method to Track Food Consumption and Preference in Drosophila

2023

This video describes the CApillary FEeder, or CAFE, assay, a behavioral method that measures food intake and preference of unrestrained fruit flies. The featured protocol shows how to perform the assay with minimal evaporation from the liquid-filled capillaries used to deliver the food and track its intake.

This paper presents a protocol for the investigation of social transmission of food preference in mice. The advantages and possible applications for this procedure, for instance, in detecting early changes in AD mouse models, are highlighted. To conclude, interpretation of the results in light of critical details are discussed.
