Free Field Localization

Free-field localization is the ability to determine the position of a sound source in an open environment, an essential component of auditory behavior and spatial awareness. The nervous system estimates sound direction by integrating binaural cues, including interaural time and level differences, with spectral changes produced by the outer ears; head movements can further refine these estimates. Studying free-field localization in humans and animals reveals how sensory systems guide orientation, approach, avoidance, and communication. Behavioral experiments can measure localization accuracy under controlled acoustic conditions, providing insight into auditory processing, neural coding, and adaptation to complex or changing environments.

Recording of Local Field Potential from Both Hemispheres of the Mouse Brain

2025

This video demonstrates in vivo recording of local field potential (LFP) from bilateral M2 areas of the mouse brain. An anesthetized mouse is secured and prepared for the procedure. To record LFPs, insert microelectrodes into the target coordinates of the bilateral M2 areas, which are responsible for complex motor movements.

Concurrent Recording of Co-localized Electroencephalography and Local Field Potential in Rodent

2017

This protocol describes a simple method for concurrent recording of co-localized electroencephalography (EEG) and multi-laminar local field potential in an anesthetized rat. A burr hole drilled in the skull for the insertion of a microelectrode is shown to produce negligible distortion of the EEG signal.

Recording of Local Field Potential in Mouse Hippocampal-Entorhinal Cortex Slices

2025

The video demonstrates a procedure to record the local field potential (LFP) in mouse hippocampal-entorhinal cortex slices. Electrical stimulation is provided at the CA3 stratum radiatum of the hippocampus, which causes changes in the postsynaptic potential at the CA1 stratum pyramidale. The combined change in the membrane potential of CA1 neurons, termed the local field potential, is recorded.

Concurrent Electroencephalographic and Local Field Potential Recordings in an Anesthetized Rat

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for concurrent recordings of co-localized electroencephalography (EEG) and local field potentials (LFPs) in an anesthetized rat. The process involves preparing the rat and attaching stimulating electrodes to its whisker pads. An EEG spider electrode is placed on the rat's skull for surface EEG measurements. At the same time, a multi-channel microelectrode is inserted into a specific brain region through a burr hole in the skull to record neural activity...

Local Field Fluorescence Microscopy: Imaging Cellular Signals in Intact Hearts

2017

In the heart, molecular events coordinate the electrical and contractile function of the organ. A set of local field fluorescence microscopy techniques presented here enables the recording of cellular variables in intact hearts. Identifying mechanisms defining the cardiac function is critical in understanding how the heart works under pathological situations.
